Majette for Senate?

Rollcall ($ub req.) and Capitol Impact's Georgia Report ($sub) are reporting that Congresswoman Denise Majette (GA 4) is being mentioned as a possible Senate candidate. Just passing this info on, really. I thought Majette was a relatively weak candidate (who ran against a much weaker candidate in the primary and general elections) who benefited from the fact that no stronger candidates were willing to get into the race against Cynthia McKinney. Of course, there are a lot of parallels with the Senate race, which a long list of suitors has turned down.

According to Capitol Impact, other rumored candidates are Columbus lawyer Jim Butler (who I'd heard mentioned) as well as state Rep. DuBose Porter (D - Dublin) and state Sens. Carol Jackson (D - Cleveland) and Michael Meyer von Bremen (D - Albany).

I don't think Butler has the bonafides to go from the Natural Resources board to statewide office. Porter's probably DOA due to his prominent role in the flag change and tobacco tax increase, though his departure from the Speaker Pro Tem's office would open up opportunities for some political allies of mine in the House. Jackson might make a good candidate, but would better serve Georgia Democrats by holding her North Georgia seat (unless ex-Sen. Bart Ladd (R - Dunwoody) makes good on his promise to run for that seat, which I doubt he could win even if it were open). Meyer von Bremen could probably make a good candidate, but if he thought he had a good chance why wouldn't you just talk Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor into running instead?

Wes, Greg Greene, others: We should start an inside baseball Georgia politics group blog. Remember how great the Georgia stuff was on the Political State Report last session? Why limit it to there?

Because ya'll would constantly school me on state politics (I tend to only pay attention to issues, and when they bite me in the ass). No but that's a good thing I guess. I'm down.

So Chris, who do you think should run? Taylor? Where is he politically? All I really know is he is the "big Guy" and he likes babies. I don't think Majette is a stellar candidate, but out of the names I've heard so far (Including her and people who haven't DECLINED it, like Young) she seems to be the best, and her house seat is safe. Not that I have a problem with any of the others...

I think Majette is a good candidate. I also think Mac Collins is the strongest Republican candidate, but a lot of the media establishment doesn't agree with me. I think Thurbert Baker is the strongest Democratic candidate, but I agree with him that he should stay on as AG for now, especially considering that Perdue would appoint a temporary successor who would most likely acquiesce on all the progress Baker's made in the office in the past year.

As much as I loathe Zell, I think with a candidate like Majette running, whom he wholeheartedly endorsed last year for Congress, the media would finally stop giving him a pass and show how hypocritical he's become -- if she's good enough for US Congress, isn't she good enough to be your successor?

What do I know though?

Careful what you wish for... Zell would probably come up with some bullshit about how Majette "sold out to the Washington liberals" so he could support the Republican. But hey I wish for the same thing you do. I'm running for Majette's seat if she goes for senate.

I've gotta warn you, running for office is harder than it seems:

But don't take my word for it...

Hold the phone, there's a Republican from Dekalb? You must have run a horrible campaign. Did you say yopu were against the death penalty or something?

Yeah yeah. Roy Barnes got about 42% of the district, as did Cleland. Sen. David Adelman got about 35% of that district.

Let's see, I spent maybe $5,000 on the race (about half of it raised). Roy Barnes spent $20 million on his race. Yet he did not do 4,000 times better than me, in fact, he did not even get 4,000 more votes than me :)

It is a very liberal Republican, if that matters. The stories I can tell from that campaign.
