My own personal thought is that a true escalation of the culture war in this regard may backfire - a lot of otherwise Republican leaning voters might find out that in fact their sister/coworker/best friend/etc is gay. Might not swing Georgia but could make the difference in Pennsylvania or Virginia.

Look, we all know that the biggest homophobes are homophobic because they are surpressing their own true homosexuality. Just ask Eric Johnson.
